HEALTH CANADA  –  Information on various topics related to medications, natural products, nutrition guide, allergies, safety standards and food recalls.  Very broad based.

There is a new Canadian site that may be helpful when discussing possible testing with your physician.  It reviews various testing including CT and MRI scans, some blood tests, etc with suggestions about their appropriate use.

Agencies dedicated to specific disease:

There are many national organizations for specific diseases.  Seven of the most common are listed here.  If you are looking for another medical condition eg. ALS try going on the internet and type in ALS.ca.  That seems to be the format used by most.

All focus on education and research and will, in most cases, have charity status to accept donations for their mandates.   Each site provides  both general and specific information about their particular disease/condition.  Information is usually available in both digital and print format, often in several languages.  Many have newsletters and some present webinars.

HAPPY IN MY HOME – formerly Community Support Services of Niagara

This is a non-profit organization with volunteers providing a wide range of services to enable seniors to continue to live at home.  Services include Meals on Wheels, drivers for medical appointments, minor house keeping and yard services, grocery delivery, outings and friendly visiting.  Check the website for a full list of services.  For most there is a small user fee.

The main office is in St. Catharines, with a satellite office in Beamsville.

 

HOSPICE NIAGARA –  website  hospiceniagara.ca 

Hospice programming aims to enhance the quality of life for anyone facing a life threatening or life ending illness by providing palliative care from the time of diagnosis through bereavement.  Support is offered in the home and later in two Niagara end of life hospices, for those in the last few weeks of their life.  Care and support is also extended through this period to caregivers and during the grief period.

WELLSPRING NIAGARA –  website    wellspring.ca

A rather unusual organization which has a huge presence in Niagara.  There are 4 centres in Ontario, 3 in New Brunswick and 5 (including satellites) in Alberta.  These all provide counselling, wellness programs, to persons with cancer or their support people.  All services are free.  Niagara office is in Fonthill.

NIAGARA REGIONAL TRANSPORT – provides bus transit within and between the communities of  Niagara, for a reasonable cost.  Information on routes, fares, and times available on line.  Service is shared.

HANDI TRANSIT  – This is a specialized service available for those with disabilities that prevent them from using standard bus service.  Service is shared.
